What made me choose Earth Sciences as a Master’s degree was the emphasis on the number of excursions and case study that focuses on the real-world problems far beyond the scope of regular lectures. The Institute of Geography and Geology has truly delivered what it had promised. I began my M.Sc. in Earth Sciences in Greifswald in the summer semester of 2023. As someone new to the city, the fellow students and the lecturers at the institute were very kind to help me get settle in quickly. The study programme is a good blend of theoretical education and practical applications. Some of the most memorable experiences include exploring a salt mine 700 m below the ground, with a whole bunch of miners wishing us “Glück auf!” as we descended; conducting water sampling in the Harz Mountains along with students from other German institutes, visiting many groundwater and wastewater treatment plants, taking part in the excursion to Bornholm. These experiences made the learning process engaging and meaningful.
Courses such Hydrogeochemistry, Medical geology, Advanced Geostatistics, Georesources and Sustainability are some of the many interesting fields of Geoscience that were introduced as part of the master’s degree programme. This diversity allowed each student to find the niche in academic or professional career after their education. Beyond everything, the constant support and guidance of the Professors and other academic staffs had a crucial role in my successful completion of the M.Sc. programme in Earth Sciences.
