Kolloquium | Let’s shake the ground – Insights to drivers, triggers and mechanisms of cliff failure on Germany’s largest Island

Let’s shake the ground – Insights to drivers, triggers and mechanisms of cliff failure on Germany’s largest Island

Dr. Michael Dietze
vom GFZ Potsdam am 25. April 2019 einladen.

“Cliff coasts are the inherently sensitive transition zones of the solid earth to the aquatic system, and their activity is controlled by marine and terrestrial processes,

both forced by climate. By multi-seasonal seismic and drone surveys of Germany’s largest island, Rügen, we elucidate the anatomy, forcing mechanisms and triggers

of 75 failures of the 100 m high chalk cliffs. This lecture introduces the field of environmental seismology and its application to the Jasmund cliff section.
Based on the identified cliff failure events we focus on different time cycles to shed light onto respectively active forcing mechanisms and their interplay.”
