Department of Physical Geography

Research activities within the department of Physical Geography focus on limnogeological, coastal marine and geoarchaeological challenges. To achieve this, we analyse lacustrine and marine deposits in our specialised sediment laboratory to reconstruct past environmental variations in given ecosystems including anthropogenic changes, i.e., those caused by human interference. Our international projects focus on South Africa, Tibet, Madagascar, Patagonia, Russia and Poland, but we are equally committed to regional and local projects in Germany, especially in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In terms of teaching, we are mainly involved in teacher education programmes and the BSc Geography degree. Our goal is to instill a competetive knowledge of Physical Geography which is cognisant of the latest research.
