Geographies of Transformation and Spatial Justice

Economic, ecological and social transformations unfold unevenly across space, and how people experience and evaluate these inequalities shapes their everyday lives and their relationship to society and politics. The Junior Professorship of Geographies of Transformation and Spatial Justice investigates how spatial living conditions shape people’s perceptions, attitudes and behaviour.

One research focus is how transformation processes change objective living conditions, such as income and employment opportunities or access to public services and infrastructure, and how people perceive the resulting inequalities. The Junior Professorship is interested in the many consequences of these experiences, including place attachment, social cohesion and participation, fairness evaluations, the acceptance of transformation processes, and political attitudes and voting behaviour. Methodologically, the focus lies on linking survey data with small-scale geodata, ranging from grid data and official regional indicators to user-generated data such as OpenStreetMap.

In teaching, the Junior Professorship is primarily involved in the Master’s programme in Regional Development, where it covers topics of spatial transformation, inequality and political geography as well as quantitative methods training. Students interested in quantitative work on spatial transformation and its societal consequences (e.g. for Bachelor’s or Master’s theses) are welcome to get in touch by email  (Anne-kathrin.stroppeuni-greifswaldde).
